Many of us appreciate the benefits of a soothing bath or a vigorous shower to cleanse and refresh our body. Equally as effective but on the psychic level is the practice of 'smudging'.

'Smudging' is the common name given to a powerful cleansing technique from the Native American tradition. However the burning of herbs for emotional, psychic, and spiritual purification is common practice in many religious, healing, and spiritual traditions. It is a ritual way to cleanse a person, place or an object of negative energies or influences.

The theory behind smudging is that the smoke attaches itself to negative energy and as it clears it takes the negative energy with it, releasing it into another space to be regenerated.

Smudging is very effective when you've been feeling depressed, angry, resentful or unwell or after you have had an argument with someone. It is also great to smudge yourself, the space and all the guests or participants before a ritual or ceremony or celebration.

You can smudge your home or work space as part of a general spiritual housecleaning and you can cleanse crystals or other objects of any negative energy with a smudging ritual.

As the legend goes, the dream catcher was used by the Woodland Indians and was hung in the lodge (near the bedroom window). Its use was to catch all dreams, good or bad. The bad dreams would get caught up in the webbing and be held there till first morning light, then burned off. Now, the good dreams were caught, and knowing their way to the opening in the center, would filter down into the feathers and are held there, only to return another night, to be dreamed.

White Sage has been used for centuries as incense and in smudge pots for ceremonial use * thus its common name of white ceremonial sage. Some Native American tribes used white sage to treat coughs and colds, or added to a sweat bath as a general tonic and fever reliever. Burning leaves have been used to fumigate a house or dwelling after a contagion, and to purify the air during illnesses. White ceremonial sage also has been used as a hair rinse and a deodorant poultice to reduce body odor.
